Blue Hexie and applique quilt

This is another one from Cathy and was designed by Lorraine from Patchwork Plus in Miranda in Sydney.  I had a lot of fun working out how to do the backgrounds of these blocks and I think they work really well.

The background of the hexie block was quilted on the statler using a design by Kim Diamond called Trim Bkg square 001.  The centre of the block has Anne Bright's Gala paisley hexagon block design.  I freehanded some feathers in the lighter hexies, and put a continuous curve in the diamonds.

In the applique block, I SID around the appique, then freehanded the feathers inside and outside of the wreath, and put in some fill.  The blue sashings were freehanded with a curly leafy design.

The outside border uses Anne Bright's Majolica border and p2p.

Orange table or bed runner



Well, its been so long since I have published some pictures, that blogger have had a change and now I have managed to put these pics in an odd format and I can't work out how to move them...anyway I'm sure I'll work it out before the next update.

This beauty is Joy's, and could either be used as a table runner or a bed runner.  I love the colours and all the different fabrics.  I quilted it freehand with feathers and other fillers, changing thread colours to blend with the fabrics, so there is a lovely wholeclothy look on the back.

We have been really busy with school stuff, holiday stuff and the like.  I hope to get some more regular pictures up, but we'll see.

Stack and whack

Sorry its been so long - its been a busy 6 weeks. My baby turned 12 at the end of last month and as you can see he is now taller than me....and wears a size 10 mens shoe.

I have also been doing several quilts which couldn't go up on my blog and there are only so many flower and dog pics which I could post without everyone running for the hills!

Anyway, here is one which I finished a couple of weeks ago. It is a stack and whack and it is gorgeous. I love the pretty floral fabric and the blocks are so delicate.

It is quilted with a mix of freehand and statler quilting.

I used several designs from One Song Needle Arts - in the red sashings, inset triangles, inside the blocks and the outside border.

In the cream around the floral design I freehanded a swirly, floral leafy design to fill the space. Also the SID was done using a ruler rather then the statler.

This is a really pretty quilt, and reaffirms my love for these blocks. I guess another one of these is on my list to do.

I'm still plugging away at Orca Bay, just about to put the rows together but it is a long slow process. And trying to get my Sydney Show entries done too - crystalling to be done there, having taken the bind of one of the quilts 3 times to get it right. But it's done now and seems to be hanging right.

In My Garden

I have been doing my own stuff during January, but now I am back to work with this beauty. It is called In My Garden by Anni Downs of Hatched and Patched in Bathurst and was made by Dawnie.





I quilted the original for Anni, but had forgotten how lovely the little details in this quilt were. There are snails, birds, flowers, chooks, butterflies and dragonflies, amongst other creatures and plants.




I think my fav block is the pear trees, just lovely.

It is quilted entirely freehand with some ruler work for the SID and I had a lot of fun with the swirls and leaves and other little details.

I have managed to finish some of my own quilts, one of which (my Jacqueline de Jong quilt which I started in a class with her the year before last), I am stitching the binding down on now, and then to put on some bling. I love bling, and look forward to putting as many crystals on this quilt as possible. I will post pics when it is done.

Fan Quilt

This beauty belongs to Rhonda and has just gone home for Christmas.

My instructions were to do "whatever you want". So I had a little play....




I used Keryn Emerson's Darra block in the centre along with Kerryn's buckle centre and Simplicity sash.



In the darker green I repeated the Darra block and triangle, along with Deb Geissler's lone star swirls elongated and manipulated to fit.

In the lighter green I used Kay Oft's feather clam 1202 as a p2p around the curve of the fans, and then Kerryn's Kendall triangle to fill.


The fans were filled with freehand swirls and parallel lines trimmed to fill the space.



The inside black border has the same feather clams as in the lighter green, the green border uses the Simplicity sash design (as in the centre) and the outside border has freehand swirls in it.

I really enjoyed quilting this quilt and playing with the designs to make them work.

Butterfly Garden

I quilted this lovely a couple of weeks ago, another one for Jane, and it is a BOM by Leanne Beasley called Butterfly Garden.




I freehanded a swirly hearty design in the centre of the quilt, going around the hearts, butterflies and stitcheries, then did a clam based design in the green inside border, also freehand with my clam ruler.



I was going to use a digitised heart design in the outside border, but decided that a freehand heart would fit in best with the rest of the quilt. Isn't it lovely? I do like the butterflies over the top of the scrappy centre.




I have been out in our garden first thing in the morning taking some shots of the roses. I love the pinks in this one and it has a beautiful smell too. And, my hayfever isn't playing up, so I can actually take a big sniff of the fragrance and not sneeze for the rest of the day! Bonus!

Bluebirds and Berries

I have just sent this beauty home to its mama, and aren't those little birdies so cute? It is a design by Gail Pan and was made by Jane. Very cute.

It is not heavily quilted, just some SID around the appliques, hearts and circles, and then continuous leaves in the scrappy squares in the centre. The light blue border has a freehand clammy doodle in it, and the outside border has an Anne Bright design called Ivy Trellis Heart Border.

It is nearly the end of the school year here, just another 2 weeks before a 6 week Christmas school holiday, and we are ready for a break! As is my friend below who is still practicing his double bass every morning - at the moment we are learning "The Great Gate of Kiev" - (aka The Great Gate of Kevin!!). He went from a quarter size to a half size bass this term and it is so big it needs to sit in the front passenger seat of the red car! I had visions of having to put the trailer on every Saturday to take the thing into town for music, but I am saved from having to do that - or buy another car. Next year he will go up another size....
